Decolonizing Mental Health
Critical perspectives on Western psychology and inclusive well-being

This workshop challenges the dominant narratives of mental health that often exclude, pathologize, or overlook non-Western forms of care. Participants will be introduced to critiques of mainstream psychology, including its roots in individualism, its clinical detachment, and its role in maintaining cultural hierarchies. We look at how racism, colonial histories, and Eurocentrism are embedded in mental health systems and ask: whose pain is recognized, and whose healing is validated?
Drawing on decolonial theory, community health practices, and lived experience, this space invites dialogue around how we understand care and suffering across cultures. Participants are encouraged to share their own healing traditions and reflect on what knowledge they carry that is often invisible in mainstream frameworks. A playful yet powerful ice-breaker using TikTok reels and images helps warm up critical thinking around common self-help messages and the pressure to “be happy” at all costs.
