Masculinities and Emotional Expression

Creating space for men to explore emotions and care

In many cultures, masculinity is shaped by silence — especially around feelings like vulnerability, sadness, or fear. This workshop invites men and masculine-identifying participants to reflect on how gender norms have shaped their emotional lives, relationships, and mental health. Without pathologizing or blaming, we gently question the messages many have received about “being a man”: self-sufficiency, stoicism, strength as detachment.

Through shared storytelling, group dialogue, and expressive methods like journaling or non-verbal art, we open space for emotional honesty. We ask: what emotions have been allowed, and which have been shut down? What kinds of support do we long for but don’t ask for? Participants explore how care and tenderness can be reclaimed as powerful forms of masculine connection — with others and with themselves.

Topics:

  • Masculinity myths and emotional restriction

  • Anger and fear as defense mechanisms

  • Building male intimacy and support

  • Redefining care as strength

Methodology:

  • Deconstructing Manhood Wall: Group critique of masculine norms

  • Feeling Words Expansion: Playful vocabulary-building activity

  • Small Group Circles: Sharing emotional experiences like shame or grief

  • Journaling/Art: Optional non-verbal outlet for difficult emotions

Qualifications : Facilitators trained in gender studies, men’s mental health, and trauma work. Experienced in group work and emotional literacy among diverse masculinities
